About Institute
In April of 2019 the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań’s authorities prepared the list of documents necessary to legally establish the Polish Archaeological Institute at Athens and forwarded them through
diplomatic channels to the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Greece.
On 29th of May 2019 the Central Archaeological Board of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Republic of Greece gave its permission to establish the Polish Archaeological Institute at Athens. In the wake of this, the Minister of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Greece officially declared the PAIA as a legally existing entity by the letter dated to 28th of June 2019 and categorized the Institute as a “Foreign Archaeological School in Greece”.
PAIA is a unit of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (and functions as a University Centre – an equivalent of faculty/department). The main task of the Institute is to represent Polish scientists, which are planning to conduct their research in Greece, before the Greek authorities. In this way the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań became the coordinator of the Polish research in Greece. It is essentially important for archaeologists, as according to the Greek law every fieldwork (like excavations and surface surveys) conducted by the foreigner must be connected with the appropriate “archaeological school” in Athens. Nevertheless, it is also significant for other scientists (like historians, art historians, Byzantine researchers, classic philologists and numerous others), as it open new perspectives for their research development.
In order to coordinate the activity of all Polish scientific institutions interested in conducting research in Greece, the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań signed on the 26th of September 2018 an agreement with the following entities: Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of Polish Academy of Sciences, Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Rzeszów University and Warsaw University. This legal agreement regulates the laws and responsibilities of a “leading Partner” which is the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and the rest of the Partners concerning the governance, financial matters and services of the PAIA for the good of the Polish science.
The PIAA is to be a kind of “embassy” of Polish science and culture in Greece. Its organizational structure reflects the variety of different entities involved as well as the scientific scope of interests. The main bodies of the Institute are: The director supported by the vice-director and the scientific secretary in Athens and scientific home secretary in Poznań, the Governance Council and Academic Board.
The Governance Council consists of the 26th September 2018 agreement’s signatories. The main task of this body is to support the directorate in governing the PAIA.
The Academic Board is evaluating the research projects of scientists who wish to conduct their investigations in Greece. At the same time the Board is also the publishing board of the PAIA publications.
The fact of the existence of PAIA is a breakthrough in the scientific-cultural relations between Greece and Poland. It opens new research horizons for Polish scientists interested in Greece, that was and is the crucial center for the development of the European civilization.
