Mycenaean Pefkakia Excavation Project is back! The third season of excavations at the Late Bronze Age harbour site of Pefkakia began this week. The project is a Polish-Greek collaboration organised under PAIA auspices and directed by Dr. Anthi Batziou, director emeritus of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Magnesia, and Prof. Bartłomiej Lis from the Instytut Archeologii i Etnologii PAN. The international team is composed of researchers and students from Poland, Greece, the USA, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Hungary. The excavations focus primarily on extending trenches opened during the previous two seasons in an attempt to uncover more of the Late Bronze Age architecture discovered in the western part of the site. We are also looking forward to more light being shed on some aspects of the Hellenistic phase of the site. The first week was devoted to setting up work both at the site and in the storeroom, removal of topsoil in two extensions – the team is ready for discoveries in the next four weeks. Fingers crossed for yet another successful season!
